We were seated within 10 minutes of our reservation and that gave us time for a drink in the bar section. If you like that, you may give it five stars however, I prefer to be able to have a conversation with my loved ones during dinner without struggling to hear what they are saying. So we checked off a bucket list of Christmas in NYC. The intent here, I believe, is the experience of coming somewhere like this, especially if you are younger, an unusual place that has an almost in-your-face vibe because of the loud music and crowded space. I have to admit that I have had better Thai in tiny little mom and pop take-out places that cost one quarter of this meal. If you are not a chopsticks person, you’ll need to ask the waitstaff for utensils! I had the diver Sea Scallops with Red Curry and Basil it had a lovely taste and the scallops were cooked well. You have chopsticks and a large spoon at the table. The interior of this place is a delightful combination of old brick from the revitalized building and beautiful Asian elements, including kanji symbols on the ceilings. Once we got seated, we could enjoy the spectacular view of a 2-3 story Buddha along the main wall. The restaurant is so crowded with people, closely positioned tables and chairs that I wonder how a crowd could get out safely in case of an emergency. This is mostly a 20-30’s young adult crowd. It’s so loud that you have to lean in to talk to people you are sitting or standing near. Be aware that this area is very dark when you enter and your senses will be hit with loud music spun by a DJ there. Entering: You enter a small vestibule and then comes an onslaught of people packed in there waiting. The outside is non-descript, you would never know what is inside if you didn’t open the door and check it out. We were a party of four with reservations at 8 pm. I definitely will not be going back to that location and feel bad for anyone that has a 9:00pm or later reservation.

Still no smile, no personality, no sincerity. She brings out 3 strawberries cut in half with a lit candle in one and says sorry our kitchen was closed. We get our food around 10, eat and expect to have a dessert to celebrate the birthday. We got there at 9 and did not have a server come take our order until 9:30.) A few minutes later we put in our order. It’s 9:30 now, and she doesn’t say hello, doesn’t ask if we want to order another drink, doesn’t say anything other than, “Are you ready to order our kitchen closes at 10:00pm” (Keep in mind Open table let’s you make reservations until 9:45. The next server comes to our table about 10 minutes after we got our drinks. I thought we may have a chance to g et a better more friendly server. We don’t see him for the rest of the night. He brings our drinks slams them on the table and races off. He had no expression, seemed irritated and asked what we wanted to drink.

Once we arrived at the restaurant we were seated and had our first server come to our table after 5-10 minutes. We have been to the Downtown location, but we decided to try Uptown for a birthday celebration. Tao Uptown should not take reservations past 9:00pm.
